Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and this cute little mini heart pinata is an easy addition to your Valentine’s Day decor! I’m making one for each of my girls this year to hang at their places at the table. I usually make them a special breakfast and put out a few little decor items and candies! They love waking up to their special holiday breakfasts and it doesn’t take much effort to set up! This year I filled the pinatas with Hershey’s kisses! These are so quick and easy to make…Here’s how to make a Valentine’s Day Heart Pinata:

You will need the following:
I actually used the box that some of my Valentine’s Day candies came in as a template since it was handily heart-shaped! You can find lots of free heart templates to print online if you need one!
Open up your cereal box so that it lays flat.
Then trace your hearts onto your box. You only need 2 if you are making one pinata. Don’t worry about tracing over folds in the cardboard. It doesn’t need to be perfectly flat!
Cut out your hearts and then cut 2 strips from the extra cardboard that are about 1.5 to 2″ wide and long enough to match the length of the heart on each side. (Don’t forget to factor in the curve – I didn’t measure this part I just guestimated!)
Attach the strips vertically to the edge of the heart using tape.
This part doesn’t have to be pretty. Use as much tape as you need so that the strips are firmly attached.
Cut a little flap out of one of the strips so that you can put candy inside when you are finished!
Make sure the hearts on both sides are taped securely!
Now it’s time to make the frills! Take a streamer and fold it over into sections about 3 or 4″ wide. I folded a couple of feet of streamer this way.
Then make cuts about 1/4″-1/2″ wide that are about 2/3 the width of the streamer long.
When you unfold your cut streamer you should have some pretty frills!
Hold your streamer length up against your heart and cut into lengths just wide enough to cover edge to edge.
Repeat until both sides are covered except for a row at the very top.
To make the top row of frills fold a streamer just like you did for the rest of the frills. Then fold the top 1/3 of the streamer down and make a second smaller row of cuts.
Now add this “double frill” to the top of the heart. Don’t worry if the tape is visible at the top. You don’t really notice it once it’s all finished! (If you prefer to use glue that works too and isn’t visible at all!)
Now add a string to the top of your pinata to hang it from! I used lots of tape to make sure it was securely fastened. This is especially important if you are actually going to use it as a pinata and hit it to get the candies out!
Don’t forget to put your candies in at this stage before you cover the sides!
Now it’s time to seal it up! Cut shorter pieces of frills the width of the side of the heart. Tape these on starting at the bottom and work your way up until the sides are covered!
I taped some pieces of ribbon to the bottom of the heart for fun!
And there you have it! The cutest little mini Valentine’s Day heart piñata that only takes a few minutes to make!
I hope you’ve enjoyed this quick and easy tutorial on how to make a Valentine’s Day heart piñata! They are sweet for Valentine’s day, but you could use them in so many other ways too….for baby showers, gender reveal parties, birthday parties and more!
